Educational games have lots of advantages in teaching and learning activity. Students become more active. Games also encourage students to learn outside the class.
"PLAYING SHOULD BE FUN! In our great eagerness to teach our children we studiously look for "educational" toys, games with built-in lessons, books with a "message." Often these "tools" are less interesting and stimulating than the child's natural curiosity and playfulness. Play is by its very nature educational. And it should be pleasurable. When the fun goes out of play, most often so does the learning."
- Joanne E. Oppenheim (1). (Kids and Play, ch. 1, 1984).
Here are some advantages of using educational games in teaching and learning activity.
1) Educational games make teaching and learning activity more interesting
There are some kinds of educational games teachers can use: visual games, audio games, and interactive games. Games help students to visualize what they are learning at class. Games also motivate them and make them more active. Thus, the activity becomes students-centered.
2) Educational games make teaching and learning activity more interactive
By playing games in teams, students are not passive. Most of them will take part playing the game. They will work cooperatively with the others, not learning alone. It is good for them. They get lots of experiences during the game. Experience is the best teacher, right?
3) Students more focus
There are some studies said that students will more focus when learning by games. It means that students will perform well than not using games. Logically, they want to win the game, so that they more focus.
4) Teachers can save their energy
It is not like traditional method, by using games, teachers do not need to explain during the class. Teachers just give instruction and control the activity. However, teachers should choose the appropriate educational games to the students.
5) Educational games build positive perspective in the students’ mind
Fun learning in class can make students more interested in learning. If they feel fun in class, they like to be there and like to study. The students will be motivated to study.
Those are some advantages of using educational games in teaching and learning activity. There are lots of advantages, actually, but I just share them now.
